"I had that line [‘I've been playing dead my whole life’] first, and I've had it for at least five years. Just feeling like a waking zombie every day, that's how my depression manifests itself. It's like lethargy, just feeling exhausted. I'm not manic depressive—I fucking wish. I wish I was super creative when I'm depressed, but instead, I just look at my phone for eight hours. And then you start kind of falling in love and it all kind of gets shaken up and you're like, ‘Can this person fix me? That'd be great.’ This song is about being close to somebody. I mean, it's about my drummer. This isn't about anybody else. When we first broke up, it was so hard and heartbreaking. It's just so weird that you could date and then you're a stranger from the person for a while. Now we're super tight. We're like best friends, and always will be. There are just certain people that you date where it's so romantic almost that the friendship element is kind of secondary. And ours was never like that. It was like the friendship element was above all else, like we started a million projects together, immediately started writing together, couldn't be apart ever, very codependent. And then to have that taken away—it’s awful." ― Phoebe Bridgers[1]
"ICU" (alternately spelled as "I See You") is the ninth track on Phoebe Bridgers' sophomore album, Punisher. It was released as the third single on May 19, 2020 through Dead Oceans.
Background[]
Bridgers originally titled her new single "ICU", but upon its release, she’s changed it to "I See You", due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Bridgers claims that "ICU" is about her ex-boyfriend/drummer Marshall Vore, who plays on the track and co-wrote it. “It’s about my breakup with my drummer,” she said. "We dated for a few years, made music every day, and were extremely co-dependent. We became like family to each other, so our breakup was extremely tough. But if this tells you anything about our relationship, we wrote this song together, just like everything else."[2]
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Laying down on the lawn
I'm tired of trying to get in the house
I'm thinking out loud
I've been playing dead
My whole life
And I get this feeling whenever I feel good
It'll be the last time
[Refrain]
But I feel something when I see you now
I feel something when I see you
[Verse 2]
If you're a work of art
I'm standing too close
I can see the brush strokes
I hate your mom
I hate it when she opens her mouth
It's amazing to me how much you can say
When you don't know what you're talking about
[Refrain]
But I feel something when I see you now
I feel something when I see you
[Bridge]
I used to light you up
Now I can't even get you to play the drums
'Cause I don't know what I want
Until I fuck it up
[Refrain]
But I feel something when I see you now
I feel something
[Outro]
I'll climb through the window again
But right now, it feels good not to stand
Then I'll leave it wide open
Let the dystopian morning light pour in
